What affects the cost

  • Hourly or flat rate. Many plumbers bill by the hour. Others charge a flat price for common jobs like a clog or a running toilet. Ask which way you are being charged.
  • Service call and trip fees. Most plumbers charge to come out. Angi says companies may add $50 to $300 when you are more than 10 miles outside their area.
  • Experience. A master plumber costs more per hour than a journeyperson or apprentice.
  • Timing. Nights, weekends and holidays cost more.
  • Access. Pipes behind walls, under floors or in crawl spaces take longer to reach.
  • Parts and permits. Fixtures, pipe and any permit are on top of labor.

Questions to ask a shop

  1. Do you charge by the hour or a flat price for this job?
  2. What is your service call fee, and is it applied to the work?
  3. Is there a minimum charge, like one hour?
  4. What are your after-hours rates?
  5. Are parts included in the quote, and do you mark them up?
  6. Will you need to open a wall or floor? Who repairs it?
  7. What warranty do you give on the work?

Check the license

In Idaho, plumbing is licensed by DOPL; search the shop on the DOPL license search. In Washington, use L&I's Verify a contractor tool.

Safety first

For a burst pipe, shut off the main water valve and turn off power to any wet area if you can do it safely. If you smell gas, leave the house and call 911 or your gas utility from outside.

Common questions

How much does a plumber charge per hour?

Angi lists $45 to $200 per hour, and HomeGuide lists $45 to $150. Master plumbers charge the most.

Are these Spokane or Coeur d'Alene prices?

No. They are national ranges from Angi and HomeGuide. We will only show local price ranges once we have at least 10 real shop quotes for this job in that area from the last 12 months.

What is a plumber's service call fee?

Angi lists $100 to $250. Many plumbers apply it to the job if you hire them. Ask before they come out.

Is a flat rate better than hourly?

A flat rate tells you the price up front, which helps with common jobs. Hourly can cost less for a quick fix. Ask for the price in writing either way.

What does it cost to use Doing Work?

Nothing. Doing Work is free for homeowners, and shops never pay for leads or to be included.
