The short answer
Angi's national range for an electrical panel upgrade is $1,200 to $2,000. A 200-amp panel installed runs $1,300 to $2,000 in Angi's guide. HomeGuide lists $1,300 to $1,600 to go from 100 to 200 amps, with a national average of $1,475 for replacing a panel. These are national ranges, not Spokane or Coeur d'Alene prices.
| Panel size | Panel and install (national) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 100 amps | $800 to $1,500 | Angi |
| 150 amps | $1,300 to $1,600 | Angi |
| 200 amps | $1,300 to $2,000 | Angi |
| 300 amps | $1,800 to $3,500 | Angi |
| 400 amps | $2,000 to $4,000 | Angi |
What affects the cost
- Amperage. Going to 200 amps costs less than going to 400 amps.
- Meter and service line. A new 200-amp panel may need a bigger meter base and service line to deliver the full 200 amps. Angi lists $200 to $800 for a meter box install or replacement.
- Permit. Angi lists $50 to $300. Most electricians pull it for you.
- Panel location. If the panel is hard to reach or has to move, expect more labor and maybe drywall repair.
- Old wiring. Worn wiring found during the job adds cost. Rewiring is a separate, bigger project.
- Utility work. Some upgrades need the power company to disconnect and reconnect service. Ask the electrician to coordinate it.
Questions to ask a shop
- What amperage do you recommend, and why? Are you planning for an EV charger, heat pump or hot tub?
- Does the price include the meter base and service line, or only the panel?
- Will you pull the permit and schedule the inspection?
- Will you coordinate with the power company? How long will the power be off?
- How many breaker spaces will the new panel have?
- Does any wiring need to be replaced, and how would you price it?
- What warranty do you give on the work?
Check the license
Panel work must be done by a licensed electrician. In Idaho, search the electrician on the DOPL license search. In Washington, use L&I's Verify a contractor tool.
Safety first
Signs like burning smells, a hot panel, buzzing, or breakers that trip again and again need an electrician soon. Don't open the panel cover yourself.
Get quotes
Tell us why you want the upgrade (more power, a new appliance, an old fuse box) and add a photo of the panel with the door open and the label inside. You check the job summary first, and nothing goes to shops until you confirm it. Then we invite local shops that fit the job, whether or not they use Doing Work, and you compare the quotes they send. Common questions
How much does it cost to upgrade to a 200-amp panel?
Angi lists $1,300 to $2,000 for a 200-amp panel installed. HomeGuide lists $1,300 to $1,600 to go from 100 to 200 amps. A new meter base or service line adds to that.
Are these Spokane or Coeur d'Alene prices?
No. They are national ranges from Angi and HomeGuide. We will only show local price ranges once we have at least 10 real shop quotes for this job in that area from the last 12 months.
Is 200 amps enough for my house?
For many homes, yes. Angi calls 200 amps the current standard for homes. Larger homes or homes adding EV chargers, hot tubs or electric heat may need more. An electrician can do a load calculation.
Do I need a permit?
Panel replacements generally need a permit and inspection. Most electricians handle it. Ask whether the fee is in the quote.
What does it cost to use Doing Work?
Nothing. Doing Work is free for homeowners, and shops never pay for leads or to be included.
