The short answer
Angi puts the national average for a new furnace at $4,814, with most homeowners paying $2,823 to $6,896 (based on 11,869 projects). HomeGuide lists $3,500 to $7,500+ installed, and $3,800 to $11,500+ for a high-efficiency furnace. These are national ranges, not Spokane or Coeur d'Alene prices. With our cold winters, it is worth getting quotes before the old furnace quits.
| Furnace type | Installed cost (national) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Electric | $2,000 to $7,000 | Angi |
| Natural gas | $3,800 to $10,000 | Angi |
| Propane | $3,700 to $14,200 | Angi |
| Oil | $6,750 to $10,000 | Angi |
What affects the cost
- Fuel type. Gas, electric, propane and oil furnaces have very different price ranges (see the table).
- Size. A bigger home needs more heating output, which costs more. A good company sizes it with a load calculation, not a guess.
- Efficiency. High-efficiency furnaces cost more up front and less to run each winter.
- Ductwork and venting. Old ducts or venting may need repairs or changes to work with a new furnace. Angi lists $2,000 to $5,000 for new ductwork.
- Permit and removal. Many furnace swaps need a permit, and the old unit has to be hauled away. Angi lists $60 to $330 for removal. Ask whether both are included.
- Timing. A no-heat emergency in January leaves less room to compare. Replacing on your schedule usually means more choice.
Questions to ask a shop
- How did you size the furnace for my house? Did you do a load calculation?
- What efficiency rating are you quoting, and roughly what would a higher one save me each year?
- Does my ductwork or venting need any work? Is that in the quote?
- Will you pull the permit, and is the fee included?
- Does the price include removing the old furnace?
- What warranty comes with the furnace, and what do you guarantee on labor?
- Are there utility rebates for this model?
- How long will the house be without heat during the swap?
Check the license
In Idaho, HVAC work is licensed by DOPL; search the shop on the DOPL license search. In Washington, use L&I's Verify a contractor tool.
Safety first
If you smell gas, or your carbon monoxide alarm goes off, get everyone outside right away and call 911 or your gas utility from outside.
Get quotes
Tell us what is going on with your furnace in plain words and add a photo of the unit and its label. You check the job summary first, and nothing goes to shops until you confirm it. Then we invite local shops that fit the job, whether or not they use Doing Work, and you compare the quotes they send. Your phone and email stay private until you pick a shop. Common questions
How much does a new furnace cost?
Angi's 2026 national average is $4,814, and most homeowners pay $2,823 to $6,896. HomeGuide lists $3,500 to $7,500+ installed. A written quote from a local shop is the real number for your house.
Are these Spokane or Coeur d'Alene prices?
No. They are national ranges from Angi and HomeGuide. We will only show local price ranges once we have at least 10 real shop quotes for this job in that area from the last 12 months.
Should I repair or replace my furnace?
Age, repair cost and how often it breaks all matter. Angi suggests that a furnace over about 18 years old with problems may be cheaper to replace than repair. Ask a shop to price both.
Why do furnace quotes differ so much?
Size, efficiency, brand, ductwork changes, permits and haul-away all change the price. Ask each shop to list what is included so you compare the same job.
What does it cost to use Doing Work?
Nothing. Doing Work is free for homeowners, and shops never pay for leads or to be included.
