What affects the cost

  • What broke. A capacitor or contactor is a small part. A compressor or coil is a big one.
  • Warranty. Parts under the maker's warranty can cut the bill a lot. Find your install date and model number.
  • Refrigerant. Leaks have to be found and fixed, not just topped off. Older units that use R-22 cost more to recharge.
  • After-hours calls. HomeGuide lists $75 to $150 per hour for regular labor and $160 to $250 per hour for nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Age of the system. On an old unit, a big repair can cost a large share of a new one.

Questions to ask a shop

  1. What exactly is wrong, and how did you confirm it?
  2. Is the part covered by the manufacturer's warranty?
  3. Is the service call fee applied to the repair?
  4. If it's a refrigerant problem, where is the leak and will you fix it?
  5. How old is my system, and is this repair worth it versus replacing?
  6. Is the price fixed, or could it change once you start?
  7. What warranty do you give on the repair?

Check the license

In Idaho, HVAC work is licensed by DOPL; search the shop on the DOPL license search. In Washington, use L&I's Verify a contractor tool.

Before you call

Check the thermostat setting and batteries, the breaker for the outdoor unit, and the air filter. A clogged filter can stop a system from cooling well.

Get quotes

Tell us what your AC is doing, and add a photo of the outdoor unit and its label. You check the job summary first, and nothing goes to shops until you confirm it.
