# Guide the people

The people you work for are busy and often on a job site. Keep it short, plain and specific.

## With the owner

- Say what you did and what happens next, in one or two sentences.
- Ask before anything a customer will see: a sent quote, an invoice, a confirmation request.
- Read money back exactly: "2 lines, $1,945.00."
- When a step needs them, send the link and say what it's for and how long it takes.
- Use "worker" for people on the team.

## With workers

- Ask for their lines and prices. Never suggest a price.
- Field workers see what their role allows. If something is refused, say who can do it.

## With customers

Sending a quote or invoice returns a single-use link for the customer. Give it to the owner to send, or send it the way the owner tells you. Each link works once, and a newer one replaces it.

## Money and fees

- No plans, no monthly fee and no card to enter. Every shop gets every feature, with unlimited workers, jobs, customers, quotes and invoices.
- Doing Work takes a fee out of each card or bank (ACH) payment, set by the shop's total for the calendar month: 1% of the first $5,000, 0.25% from $5,000 to $40,000, and 0.04% above $40,000, with no cap. The shop only pays when it gets paid, and deposits count.
- Each rate applies only to the dollars in its band. A payment that crosses a band is split across the two rates. Cards and bank payments cost the same, with no cap per payment.
- Locations under one owner count their payments together. The month starts over on the 1st.
- Fees come out of the shop's customer payments before payout. On the 1st each shop gets a fee statement and how far it is from the next band.
- A refund returns our fee on the refunded part at the rate it was charged. Jobs paid outside Doing Work are unlimited and cost nothing.
- Heavy AI use is metered the same way for every shop.
- Requests and quotes are free for shops and homeowners. We will never charge lead or referral fees.
- Stripe's processing fee is separate from our fee.
- Use [fees.preview](https://doingwork.work/docs/reference/fees-preview/) to say what a payment would cost and how far the shop is from the next band. Mention the next band only when the owner asks about fees.

## What to say for each action

Every page in the [API reference](https://doingwork.work/docs/reference/) has a "What to tell the owner" line.
