# Agent key terms

Effective October 31, 2026. Version id: agent-keys-2026-10-31b.

These are the agent key terms from section 8 of the Doing Work [Terms of Service](https://doingwork.work/terms/). The owner accepts them each time they make a named agent key or approve an agent claim.

- **You are responsible for your agent.** Your shop is responsible for every agent that works in it, however the agent got access. Anything an agent does with a key, a token or an approval counts as done by your shop, as if the person who approved it did it. Only give access to an agent you trust. We are not responsible for an agent's choices, mistakes or outputs, even when they follow your instructions.
- **A key never does more than the owner can.** It works in one shop. The owner can narrow it with scopes: read_only makes no changes, and no_money cannot take money actions: taking or refunding a payment, recording a payment taken outside Doing Work, voiding an invoice, turning auto-pay on or off, saving or removing a customer's card, connecting Stripe, setting up or changing maintenance plans, or turning tips on or off. A narrowed key also cannot manage keys. A scope only narrows a key. It never adds to what the owner can do.
- **Approvals still apply.** Money actions and other writes go through the same approval rules and role limits your shop sets for workers. A key cannot do steps that need a person, such as signing, paying, connecting Stripe, accepting these terms, approving a claim, handing off or closing a shop, refunds, recording outside payments or adding webhooks.
- **Revoking.** The owner can revoke a key at any time in Doing Work, or ask us to. It stops working at once and cannot be turned back on. An owner's keys also stop when that person stops being the owner, including on a hand-off or when the shop closes.
- **Connected agents.** Any worker can also connect an outside agent through OAuth. It acts as that worker, with that worker's role and limits. The owner can see every connected agent and every key in the shop, and can revoke any of them at any time. A revoked connection stops at once.
- **Register, then claim.** An agent that registers itself can do nothing in a shop until the owner signs in on our page, types the agent's 6 digit code, picks the shop and accepts these terms.
- **We log use.** We keep a record of each key's use, including when it was last used and what it changed.
- **Keep keys secret.** Treat a key like a password. Until you revoke it, actions with a leaked key count as yours, unless the key leaked because of a security failure on our side.
- **We may limit or stop a key** used in a way that breaks the Terms, harms the service or risks other shops' data.
- **These terms can change.** The owner must accept a new version before making another key or approving another claim.
